Ruri and Akito play a video game.

This is a little web page about my struggles to learn some of the Japanese language and play the three Sega Nadesico video games that I have obtained (two Saturn games and one Dreamcast game). Hopefully some of the information here will be useful.

Why Bother?

The Sega Saturn game "Blank of Three Years" continues the story of the Nadesico crew in the intervening years between the end of the TV series and the movie. I simply want to get as much of the Nadesico story as I can.

Mobile Battleship Nadesico

This game is your basic Japanese dating sim. You play the part of Tenkawa Akito and attempt to build relationships with the female crew members. There are some limited frantic button pushing action sequences, played out with animated cut scenes.

Mobile Battleship Nadesico: The Blank of Three Years

This is more of an illustrated interactive audio novel than a game. It is chock full of Japanese text and speech and is very heavy going if your Japanese isn't up to speed. (You guessed it, I'm having a lot of trouble.)

Mobile Battleship Nadesico: The Mission

This is a Sega Dreamcast game, set in the time period after the Nadesico Prince of Darkness movie. It revolves around RPG style tactical combat.

Mobile Battleship Nadesico: Ruriruri Mahjong

This is a Nintendo Gameboy Colour game. You play Mahjong against the various Nadesico crew members.

Playing Japanese Software on a Non-Japanese Sega Saturn

Sega Saturn consoles exist in 3 region types, USA NTSC, Japan NTSC and PAL. Games made for one type of Saturn will not play on the other types, without hardware modification or some type of region code defeating software cartridge. I have an Australian PAL Saturn. I use a ST-KEY cartridge to play Japanese games.

Playing Japanese Software on a Non-Japanese Sega Dreamcast

The Dreamcast is beset by similar region lockout problems as the Saturn. I use a boot disk to defeat the Dreamcast region code.

Tackling the Games

I have my Sega Saturn console hooked up my PC video capture card. I take screen shots of the onscreen Japanese text as I blunder my way through the game. I type the Japanese text from the screen shots into the JWPce Japanese word processor (this required me to learn the Hiragana and Katakana characters and develop a little skill at looking up Kanji characters) Once the text is entered in the wordprocessor I use the JWPce built-in Japanese to English dictonary function to do a rough literal translation of the text.
