This depends upon your OS.  

In UNIX, I use the norewind tape devices, and write a "wrapper" around
the backup process.  The wrapper calls the normal ckpdb stuff, then 
calls a script or program owned by ingres with setuid/setgid to append
the dmp, jnl, as well as some other stuff to the end of the tape.
