DELIVERING ON PROMISES TO CLIENTS, CA SHIPS CA-OPENINGRES 1.1 Available On Major UNIX Platforms For Mission-Critical Computing ISLANDIA, N.Y., June 27, 1995--Delivering on the promises made during last year's acquisition of The ASK Group, Computer Associates today began shipping version 1.1 of CA-OpenIngres on nearly all major Unix platforms for mission-critical computing. The new version provides major advances in performance, reliability and scalability while preserving client investments in data, applications, and skills. "Today's release of CA-OpenIngres 1.1 reflects our commitment to provide clients with a highly-available enterprise client/server database solution across a wide range of open computing platforms," said Marc Sokol, CA vice president for product strategy. "Our extensive investment in CA-OpenIngres is clearly paying real dividends in the marketplace." CA-OpenIngres 1.1 is now available on AT&T GIS, Digital Alpha OpenVMS and VAX/VMS, Data General DG/UX, Hewlett-Packard HP-UX, IBM AIX, ICL teamserver and superserver, SUN OS and Solaris, and Novell UNIXWARE. Availability on additional platforms will be announced shortly. WHAT CLIENTS AND ANALYSTS ARE SAYING Gerrard Hocks, regional manager, Common Sense Computing, Denver, CO: "CA-OpenIngres 1.1 is the most stable version we have ever worked with. We have seen performance gains anywhere from 17-23%." Peter S. Kastner, vice president, Aberdeen Group, Boston, MA: "Many thought a year ago that CA-OpenIngres had reached a dead end. They were wrong. CA has done a creditable job in improving quality and support. Now with this announcement, CA-OpenIngres 1.1 adds significant functionality to a well respected technology base." Henry Crocker, IT systems administrator, Exide Electronics, Raleigh, NC: "CA has shown its commitment to OpenIngres -- really listening to the user requests. I have to admit I was more than pleasantly surprised with the performance and added functionality in version 1.1." MAJOR ENHANCEMENTS Performance and Very Large Database (VLDB) Improvements--New functions in version 1.1 extend CA-OpenIngres' substantial lead over other databases in allowing DBAs and application developers to deliver better performance to their users. Included is support for temporary tables, reduced logging, table space allocation and reuse, and new utilities. Partial backup and recovery minimizes database downtime. Improved Client/Server Data Access--Upgrades to the middleware and network access components of CA-OpenIngres, called CA-OpenIngres/Net, make the network client much faster. Working with Intersolv, the premier ODBC technology supplier, CA has created a new ODBC driver that delivers industry-leading performance and functionality. These two enhancements make applications that rely on CA-Visual Express, Visual Basic, Powerbuilder and similar tools run faster and deliver more productivity. SMP Exploitation--The new version also makes better use of SMP platforms, including improved name server load balancing. Users, for example, can create different server classes for OLTP and ad-hoc, providing better control of machine resources. Support for concurrent index builds allows improved SMP exploitation. Spatial Objects Library--Support for geographic data types and functions have been predefined for the CA-OpenIngres database. This provides clients with the power to store and manipulate geographic information automatically. SQL92 Support, XA Compliance, and more--In all, more than 110 new capabilities are being delivered in CA-OpenIngres version 1.1, including SQL92 support and compliance with X/Open XA for distributed transaction processing. Additional enhancements include C2 security certification and worldwide time zone support. PRICING Existing CA-OpenIngres clients under active maintenance can upgrade to version 1.1 at no charge. Pricing for new licenses varies by platform, starting at $1,000. Success Packs --including the CA-OpenIngres database, connectivity and application development software-- also are available.
