Subject: RE: RTREE vs BTREE

Rtrees are a very specialized type of index used with the spatial data types
supported by Ingres' object management extension. Indexed objects which are
spatially close to one another are placed close to one another in an Rtree
index, as well. The indexes are used for efficiently locating rows
satisfying one of the spatial predicates overlaps, intersects and inside.
They are of no use whatsoever outside of the realm of spatial data types.
