This is known as Ingres/LAN (or it was at one time anyway).
I recall seeing that this is now a sanctioned and supported technique
too.  See section 18.021 of the FAQ for the details and conditions.
The FAQ is in /pub/ingres on ftp.adc.com

Note that Ingres/LAN can only hope to work between machines of 
compatible (probably identical) architecture.  ie SPARC-to-SPARC, or
Motorola-to-Motorola, but not say, SPARC-to-Intel.  

It reputedly offers very substantial performance gains, though I've
not tried it myself.  (Maybe I will, right now! :-)
